SEND

Welcome to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities page of our school website.

Our aim

Our aim is to provide the very best for all pupils in our school in the context of a loving Christ-centred community. We recognise the gifts and needs of each individual as a valued part of our community. Although it may be considered that all children at some point in their education have individual special needs, there are groups of pupils throughout the spectrum of ability who have further and additional individual requirements.  We are committed to working for quality and equality of opportunity for all children. We believe that every teacher is a teacher of every pupil; including those with SEN.

Our approach

Inclusive education means supporting all pupils to learn, contribute, and participate in all aspects of school life alongside their peers. Our curriculum includes, not only the formal requirements of the curriculum, but also a range of additional opportunities to enrich the experience of all pupils. Our Lady of Mount Carmel prides itself in being inclusive and will endeavour to support every child regardless of their level of need.  All pupils follow the curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. Adaptive teaching means that teachers adapt their teaching to make it appropriate and accessible for all pupils in their classroom.

Alongside High-Quality Teaching some pupils will access tailored interventions with a teacher or Teaching Assistant (TA), either individually or as part of a group, if this is seen as necessary by the class teacher. Some interventions take place in the classroom and at other times children may be taken out of the classroom at appropriate and carefully considered times to take part in an intervention.
