Modern Foreign Languages

At Our Lady of Mount Carmel all KS2 children have the opportunity to learn French in a fun and interactive way through a weekly French session. The children take part in various activities to explore the language and aspects of French culture. Our ‘Try Something New Days’ and ‘Cultural Day’ also provide the opportunity for the children to experience different languages and cultures.

The children have the opportunity to develop their fluency in the language, communication and pronunciation. Some of the topics we will be covering through Year 3 and 4 will include greetings, numbers, colours, animals and food. The children will also be taught how to engage in short conversation with their peers and begin to understand simple grammar used within French.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic

sources

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of

communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking

questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
